#WinatSocial January - Play to Your Core

General Announcement

Hello Families,

Your 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students' class just ran a #WinAtSocial Lesson, about the theme: Play to Your Core.  If you have time, please continue the conversation at home about these important modern-day life stills.  Consider encouraging your child to coach up and share their ideas.  Here are some questions you can post to everyone in the family:

6th Grade: Living by our family’s values and speaking up when they’re different

  1. TOSS UP: Every family has different things that matter to them. Can you think of 3 things that matter a lot to us, even if they’re different from what other families do?

  2. COACH UP: Can you tell me about times when your friends or others challenged our family values and wanted you to do something you weren't comfortable with? How did you handle it?

  3. HUDDLE UP: How can we support each other when someone challenges our family values?

7th Grade: Learning and growing from the mistakes we all make

  1. TOSS UP: Think about a famous person you look up to. What’s a mistake they’ve talked about, and what did they learn from it?

  2. COACH UP: Which app do you think students mess up on the most? What can we do to make sure our posts and actions online don’t hurt our reputation or goals in the future?

  3. HUDDLE UP: If you ever make a mistake and need someone to talk to, what’s a code word or way we can start that conversation so I can support you? Let’s share how we’d like others to be there for us when we’re working through our mistakes.

8th Grade: Building a lasting, positive reputation on social media

  1. TOSS UP: According to a recent study by Kaplan, 59% of college admissions officers consider it “fair game” to visit students’ social media profiles when they apply to college. If a college admissions officer were to visit your social media profile right now, what 3 adjectives do you think they would use to describe you?

  2. COACH UP: This lesson focused on playing to our core, which represents taking actions online and offline that reflect on values and character. For this next exercise, think of people we’ve seen online that do a great job representing their values and staying true to themselves. What are specific ways that they convey their positive characteristics and how can we use these strategies as inspiration to continue cultivating our own positive identity online?

  3. HUDDLE UP: We also talked about the importance of celebrating small wins and accomplishments, and the positive impact that can have on our reputation and well-being. What is a recent win that each of us is proud about?
