Engineering for Earthquakes: Seventh Graders Put Structures to the Test in Simulated Seismic Activity

Students sit in library with staff member reading a book

Seventh graders in Ms. Velloth's and Ms. Guerro's Earth and Space Science class recently put their engineering skills to the test in an exciting earthquake simulation project. Students designed, built, and tested towers made from spaghetti and marshmallows to create structures that could withstand simulated earthquakes.

Using a unique tool to mimic various earthquake magnitudes, they evaluated the stability of their towers, learning firsthand how structural design impacts a building’s resilience during seismic activity. This hands-on STEM challenge combined creativity and science, giving students a unique experience in problem-solving and engineering principles.
