Seventh Graders Dive into History with Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet

Students work on project in classroom with large paper over table

This fall, seventh graders at PCMS are exploring a significant chapter in American history through their reading of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. The novel, set against the backdrop of Seattle during World War II, delves into the experiences of Japanese Americans during the era of internment camps. This subject brings both historical and emotional depth to the classroom.

One student reflected, “It’s sad to read about what happened during that time, but it’s important to learn so we don’t repeat the same mistakes.”

As the seventh graders continue their study, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is proving to be more than just a story—a lens through which they can view the past and apply its lessons to the present.
