What Do School Counselors Do?

 

• Provide support for academic, social/emotional and career oriented needs

• Individual student academic planning

• Classroom guidance lessons

• Small group counseling activities

• Short term counseling support

• Referral to SBMH Counselor for long-term support

• Collaboration with families/students/administrators

• Community for student success

• Advocacy for all students

 

Students come see us for many reasons including:

• Friends

• Bullying

• Help with grades

• Family

• Strategies to have difficult conversations

• Learning coping skills

• Needing a safe space to take a break from a stressful time

• Learning about resources

• Managing Grief/Loss

Students can make an appointment by:

• Coming to the counseling office 

• Sending us a Canvas message

• Using our Calendly link in Canvas

**Parent/guardian/caretakers may reach out to counselors through email or phone. 

Swedish Based Health Counselors (SBHCs) are Independent Licensed Social Workers, certified to diagnose and treat mental health conditions.

Any student in the Issaquah School District can be referred to a School-based Mental Health Counselor. The counselors will screen for needs, resources, and barriers to determine the appropriate level of service. This could include assessment, referral, brief counseling, collaboration with the school team, and/or consultation.

Referrals can be made through a student's School Counselor or directly through the Swedish Based Health Counselor.
